One of the many hit records that Guy Mitchell enjoyed in the 1950s. The Columbia single made No.19 in the USA Billboard charts, and was a massive No.1 in the UK NME charts. It remains one of Guy's best remembered recordings, and was always a highlight of his stage and TV performances for the rest of his life. Notice the four guys dressed as cockney pearly kings. It's top American vocal group, The Hi-Lo's.

My mum adores Guy Mitchell. We saw him live in Croydon, UK about 30 years ago. I expected to be bored to death, especially when he came on stage with a stick and spent the whole concert on a stool. Instead, it was amazing. A perfect entertainer.

This guy never loses one's attention, and so is very able as an entertainer, as well as having an ultra-cool song to sing. Tell me, was this a clip for showing before a movie, or is this from a television show?

I work in a London bank, respectable po-sitionat half past three they serve you tea but ruin your dis-po-si-tionEach night at the music calls, rather lost It seemsAnd once a pearl of a native girl kept smilin' right at meShe wears red feathers and a hooly-hooly skirtShe wears red feathers and a hooly-hooly skirtShe lives on just cokey-nuts and fish fer-rom the seaA rose in her hair, a gleam in her eyes and love in her heart for meGoodbye to the London bank, I started out a-sailin'The fourteenth day from Mandalay, I spied her from the railin'She knew I was on the way, waited, and was trueShe said, "You son of an Englishman, I've dreamed each night of you"She wears red feathers and a hooly-hooly skirtShe wears red feathers and a hooly-hooly skirtShe lives on just cokey-nuts and fish fer-rom the seaA rose in her hair, a gleam in her eyes and love in her heart for meI went to her Ma and Pa and said I loved her onlyAnd they both said we could be wed, HOH, what a ceremonyAn elephant brought her in, placed her by my sideWhile six baboons got out bassoons and played, 'Here comes the bride'oh were back here in London town and though it may seem sillyShe's here with me and yalda see us Stroll down Pic-ca-di-hillyThe boys at the London bank kinda hold their breathShe sits with me and sips her tea which tickles them to deathShe wears red feathers and a hooly-hooly skirtShe wears red feathers and a hooly-hooly skirtShe lives on just cokey-nuts and fish fer-rom the seaA rose in her hair, a gleam in her eyes and love in her heart for meThese Lyrics are a tad different from the record. :)
