Song of the Day.

For some reason I can't just reply. Odd.I'll grant that the song is intended satirically. I'll even grant that I misunderstood Guster's intention in writing it. My point was not about that. My point was that if Guster is in fact saying that, then Guster is misapprehending the nature of the Christian understanding of the relation of life, which can include injustice, to the afterlife, which will not. They would likewise have to say that about Judaism, which believes the same. Also some branches of Buddhism, many branches of Hinduism, Islam in general, and heck, why not throw Zoroastrianism into the mix. Either this is to be taken uncritically as a Christian song which will offend some, or critically, as a song which while targeted at Christianity really attacks the notion of a just afterlife.Personally, if Guster intended it the latter way, I will still listen to it for the former, because it's the Christian thing to do to presume until proven otherwise that ignorance is well-intentioned.

I'm not saying anything about people's faith, I'm just stating that this song is satirical in nature in response to someone who was under the misguided impression that this song is pro-Christianity. When a fan expressed disappointment that the song was “a bit too Christian” for him on twitter, the band responded, listen harder? #justsayin.

I don't know if one can say that fairly. We all die - that's Jewish thought too - and God is Love - that's Christian thought, though some Jewish people say it is found in the Old Testament. The question is really whether there is justice in the afterlife - Christians think there is no matter how you die - and why God lets us survive. We can't know this, but we know mercy is expressed in it, so we thank Him. We aren't "thanking Him that everyone else is dead."

Luke, how can your comment possibly get negative votes? You're spot on! I listen to this song and think of the many times in my life that Jesus has kept me safe, and I praise Him!!!

I'll interpret this song the way I want to. Enough said.

I'd say self-absorbed and egotistical. If anything, Jesus would be an asshole to postpone his entry into heaven when saving his life if he's such a solid believer. Everyone wants to feel important and the idea of a god doing miraculous things for them is one way to feed this need.

Don't worry - according to Guster, the song is satirical. It's making fun of people who always say God saved them. Guster says they're not a Christian band.

umm, that is not the message of this song. it's saying that some people claim to always have God on their side, when in reality, they're just being self-righteous.

you're right - the song is actually making fun of people who tell stories about how God continually saved them :)

According to Guster, this song is supposed to be somewhat tongue-in-cheek. For example, "Jesus" saves one man from a doomed flight, and lets everyone else die. The song could be seen as a warning against self-righteousness. Anyway, I just like how it sounds :)

I like how Jesus wears a cape and baseball cap with a "J" on them.

You did, and you don't even notice and that's one of the main reasons why I can't stand this kind of stuff.
