It sounds so raw, like a garage band. But then you really listen to it you realize how tight it really is.

What a poignant and powerful blues voice Pigpen had! This is intense!

Fantastic example of what Jerry, during the Playboy After Dark interview, described as the drummers' "forming a figure eight in your head" and their "mutual annihilation."

By far THE BEST Grateful Dead Album hands down..... Probably because this was outside their hippy crap..... Straight blues bonanza killing it!

Pigpen drank while the other tripped, Interesting to say the least. This was my favorite era of the Dead.

I'm not up on the individual Grateful Dead vocals. I know Jerry & Bob Weir's vocals -- but, if this is Pigpen..damn, they lost a great vocalist when he passed. This Grateful Dead I could listen to in successive songs. Others are fine, but I can only take them in small doses. I'm more of a Procol Harum, The Band fan. What I admire about The Dead though is their spare approach -- which leaves much of the soul of the music in tact. Not over rehearsed, or tracked. Pigpen had a great voice.
