After his incredible debut single for MAM Records NOTHING RHYMED in 1970 everyone eagerly awaited to see what came next from this new star Gilbert O`Sullivan . So when this second single came out in early 1971 many people must have been rather puzzled. What happened to the Gilbert of Nothing Rhymed ? Was he just a one-hit wonder ? As a result here in the UK the record buying public weren`t too impressed and the song just scraped into tho Top 40 for a short time . Gilbert soon bounced back however with ` WE WILL` , NO MATTER HOW I TRY ` , ` ALONE AGAIN ( NATURALLY ` and all the rest that we know and love . Looking back now it isn`t really a bad record - but a very strange choice as a follow-up to NOTHING RHYMED . Most `Greatest Hits` compilations tend to leave this one out and it does tend to be forgotten these days. I think the best thing about this recording isn`t the lyrics - but the great rock`n`roll piano playing from Gilbert !

I've always loved this song, love the original piano intro and solos. I really missed that in the live version in Den Bosch.

Sounds great - let`s hope someone captured it . Would be nice to have another official live concert video . I know one was filmed in Dublin a few years ago and it was being prepared for release - since then - NOTHING !!

This is the first time I heard this song. I was shocked. It is so different from other Gilbert songs though I like it. Kind of catchy. I don't have any of his albums and I am waiting to see if I get any for Christmas. What I don't get I will buy.

It really is a greatest song. Not the high standard of Nothing Rhymed, but what a swing the song got! Ouh!

@MrSTEVIERIKS Nice to hear from you Steve . It is a very under-rated song - not one that springs to mind when you think of Gilbert . While you are here Steve - there`s a great documentary about Gilbert being shown on BBC 4 on 26th August at 8:50 . They followed him around for one year - recording , touring , at home etc . It`s called ` OUT ON HIS OWN ` and it`s a must for Gilbert fans . If you are working you might want to record it - I know you`ll find it interesting . Thanks for commenting !

It didn't do anything in the U.K. Charts .as it was banned by the B.B.C. so didn't get any air- time ! Great song though.

@mohawk3881 I take your point completely! Matrimony was far more of a single. Or should have been, at least. :)

@GreenerHill Thanks - It`s got a lot going for it this song , but I have always thought it was more of a `B Side ` than an `A Side ` ( for those who remember what that means ! )

Mohawk - And the unusual vocals! Have always liked this, a heavier Gilby. Thanks.
