An early recording from about 1967 / 68 . Not released until the 1970`s on two obscure albums - one in America in 1972 called " The Humble Beginnings of England`s Gilbert O`Sullivan and Gerry Dorsey " ( Dorsey later became Englebert Humperdinck ! ) and then it appeared on the Italian release E LE SUE CANZONI in 1974 and also as the B- Side of a single there . The first version features piano only , the second version features a full instrumental backing . Both are unavailable on official Gilbert releases at this time . Which do you prefer ?

Personally I reckon it needed the rhythm section, and a horn/string arrangement with a bit of rhythm in it - those "piano-driven" albums like By Larry and Scruff At Heart can be tiring to listen to...it's hard for the songs to sink in when your first impression is "oh no, not another 1930s stroll"11 years ago

That`s interesting ! One of the things I wanted to do was make people aware that Ray never went away after his early success - it`s surprising how many people think that . I wanted them to realise that his album tracks are just as good - and often better - than the hits . Only the hits were featured on youtube - because they had video . The challenge was how to present the other material for which no video exists . I hope people have delved a little deeper and become more aware of his music now11 years ago

I love all the rare stuff on here. When I think of all the years it took looking through markets, music mags etc in order to obtain a rarity and the delight when it came to fruition. Now they can all be found on here. Do you know I showed Ray my copy of Humble Beginnings in the 70s and he didn't know it existed!!11 years ago

Hi there - I like both versions but my favourite is the first . The heavy piano style reminds me of the sound he achieved on the recent " A Scruff at heart " album - about 40 years later !15 years ago

H! Mo, I think your first version is very, very special. I got the second one on a single (Jupiter Records - 13 520 AT - 1974 Made in Holland) of which the labels are mixed up: it says Side1 Came To See Me Yesterday, and Side 2 Get Out Of My Life. But it's the other way around!!Related Videos
