Beautiful. You could hear Anthony Phillips influence on this early version of The Musical Box. I think this and a couple other tunes on Nursery Cryme were much contributions by him. Wish he received more credit. Anyway, these are true treasures to the Painter Michael Jackson.

This is the absolute middle point of the transition between Trespass and Nursery Cryme, you can hear visions of Angels (1:01-1:10) then transforms into Musical Box with the "question and answer" section of guitar strums and organ 'flares' so unique to Genesis and albeit slower than the album version. You can tell that this was composed for a BBC TV programme at the time, thankfully that project was shelved.

It's really sad that Antony Phillips has not received copyright he deserved to have composed this song with the other guys.

He wasn't in the band at that time but joined them a few months later.

Or even 'Realisation - It's Fry's', their tribute to the Fry's 'Five Boys' chocolate wrapper!

Except for the bit of organ, and the faster speed of this version, the first minute or so is almost completely unchanged between this and the final version that was on Nursery Cryme. What's really amazing is that they were all barely 18-19 when they wrote this!

If you're in Montreal you can catch The Musical Box live this May performing Lamb Lies Down. I saw this awesome show last week in London & I thought it uncannily good!!!

So... Manipulation, Provocation, Frustration and, I guess, the one that made it - Stagnation. Obviously going for the first prog concept album. It's a damn good start.

it was awesome. they are doing trick of the tail now. i like that album, but live it can't compare to anything that peter did. i especially liked the stories peter (or the singer of the musical box) told in between songs. what a brilliant sense of humor.

OMG!!! You're so lucky!!! I really want to see the musical box. I hear Peter, Phil and Tony like them so they must be good.

im 14 as well and Genesis has been my favorite since i was 8 and i heard the lamb. i started listening to some early phil era recently, with steve hackett, but i still think gabriel is better. especially after i saw the musical box.

I'm 14, and I got into this music at 12...I started with the PHil Collins era then, and I've been listening to the Peter Gabriel era more recently...This is my favourite band. (Just above Pink Floyd)

I'm 20 years old myself, and Genesis has been my favorite band for years. I discovered the Gabriel-era material later on, but I've always loved these guys.

Well, I'm 26. Loved old school Genesis since the age of 15, or so. That is when I got the '94 remaster of The Lamb on CD
