Pitney was an early friend of The Stones, meant to be a songwriting partner for Brian Jones, but it never worked out...

Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards - first song they had that did anything in the US or G. Br. - The Stones recorded it eventually but never released it.

the version I had of this on the ep. from 1960s had him singing in a different key, with more emotional emphasis on certain words.

and trust me when i say -- i was there, and It Hurts To Be In Love was THE single of summer 1964. (along with Wishin' and Hopin' by Dusty Springfield, over here in america/which bizarrely wasn't a UK single). beatles, stones, all of them -- nothing then or now topped Pitney's (arguably) very best of his handful of flat out HOF perfect 45s. even if you're arguing that point, it is inarguable that It Hurts To Be In Love has THE. COOLEST. SOUNDING. DRUM. KIT. EVER.

"gene's voice is UNBELIEVABLE" oh yeah hit for hit i've always enjoyed him far more than (his one close early 60's musical counterpart) Orbison. pitney's vocals often have really cool "phrasing"s to them (rhythms) that are almost riveting -- lots of the time he's hitting the downbeats (with the syllable that it falls onto) SO FUCKING HARD you think he's going to drill a hole in the wall. and then he jumps up (vocally) to his high air raid siren sound, wow. too bad this 45 wasn't huge!

This record was given to me on my 11th birthday 49 years ago & I still love it. We saw Gene Pitney perform in Adelaide many times. He was always so good. RIP Gene.

I just read that this is a Jagger/Richards composition and was their 1st top 10 hit in the UK.
