On this day in 1966 {June 23rd} Gene Pitney performed "Backstage" on the ABC-TV program 'Where the Action Is'...Eighteen days earlier {June 5th} was its last day on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; it had peaked at #25 {for 1 week} on May 22nd, 1966 and spent 8 weeks on the chart...On June 6th, 1966 it reached #2 {for 1 week} on the Canadian Kennedy Weekly Singles chart; the week it was at #2, the #1 record was "When A Man Loves a Woman" by Percy Sledge...Between 1961 and 1969 he had twenty-three Top 100 records; four made the Top 10 with "Only Love Can Break a Heart" being his biggest hit, it peaked at #2* {for 1 week} on October 28th, 1962...Gene Francis Alan Pitney passed away on April 5th, 2006 at the age of 66...May he R.I.P.* The week that "Only Love Can Break a Heart" was at #2, it was kept out of the top spot by a song that he wrote, "He's A Rebel" by the Crystals...

I remember hearing Gene Pitney on BBC, Hit-parade of sunday when I was a teenager. I'm a french woman and I didn't know his face. Thank you for that video. I haven't forgotten his great voice.

Thankyou for the great uploads . Am English 64 and always liked Gene Pitney. Saw him a few times in the sixties . Bournemouth Winter Gardens Comes to mind. Long gone! There seemed to be more modesty amongst great stars in those days.
