Gene Clark - If You Could Read My Mind

I met Gene Clark thru our mutual manager. I told my manager that he was not only my idol but my inspiration. Well, we ended up going up to his place in Laurel Canyon. We are both Native, so it was pretty cool, cuz I didn't know that when I went there. Before we jammed together, he asked me to play. I played "If you could read my mind", by Gordon Lightfoot. It was one of my standard covers. Needless to say, he loved my version, and recorded it on his little cassette deck he had set up. I moved from LA to San Jose several months after our meeting, and never saw Gene again. When I read Gene in Rolling Stone that he put out an album Firebyrd, I was proud of him. What blew my mind, was that he had his own version of "If you could read my mind." He even used the way I sing it, as to the last chorus. I would sing "I never thought I could feel this way but I have to say, I just don't get, I don't know where we went wrong, but the feelings gone,I just can't get it" over and over a few times. He loved that, and wanted me to show him the chords. This is my tiny self claim to shameless fame, and its true…RIP Gene Clark. I consider this an honor and a missed opportunity to go back and jam. If anything, this is a reminder to, "you can never go back". Now, my band Medicine Road, does not do this song, yet. Peace

He was so amazing. Good looking, talented, intelligent, and David Geffen screwed him royally. Never forgive him for that one.

For me, what distinguishes Gene Clark's version from Gordon Lightfoot's original (both wonderful) is its tempo. Lightfoot's performance is nostalgic, thoughtful, once-removed from experience. Clark's slightly uptempo approach is relentlessly heartbreaking, a paper cut to the bone.

I had the pleasure of meeting Gene during what used to be called an "in-depth" interview with him and the Byrds in their dressing room at the Trip (on the Sunset Strip) in the mid-60s. What a lovely guy. He left the stage far too early. Semper culti in memoria

I'll take Robbie Fulks or Tim Carroll or anumber of others over Adams anyday.

One of the greatest songs ever written. Great job, Gene. I hope you knew before you passed (or realize now) that you were, along with Gram Parsons and the very much alive Ryan Adams, the kings of alt country.

Very sensitive interpretation. This artist had a beautiful voice and a great emotional ability to put a song across.
