If You Could Read My Mind LYRICSIf you could read my mind, loveWhat a tale my thoughts could tellJust like an old-time movie,'Bout a ghost from a wishin' wellIn a castle, dark, or a fortress, strongWith chains upon my feetYou know that ghost is meAnd I will never be set freeAs long as I'm a ghost that you can't see.If I could read your mind, loveWhat a tale your thoughts could tellJust like a paperback novelThe kind the drug stores sellWhen you reach the part Where the heartaches comeThe hero would be meBut, heroes often failAnd you won't read that book, againBecause the ending's just too hard to takeI'd walk away, like a movie starWho gets burned in a three-way scriptAnd enter number twoA movie queen to play the sceneOf bringing all the good things out in meBut, for now, love, let's be realI never thought I could act this wayAnd I've got to say, that I just don't get itI don't know where we went wrongBut the feeling's goneAnd I just can't get it backIf you could read my mind, loveWhat a tale my thoughts could tellJust like an old-time movie'Bout a ghost from a wishin' wellIn a castle, dark, or a fortress, strongWith chains upon my feetThe story always endsAnd if you read between the linesYou'll know that I'm just tryin' to understandThe feelings that you lackI never thought I could feel this wayAnd I've got to say, that I just don't get itI don't where we went wrongBut the feeling's goneAnd I just can't get it back

Thank you for sharing this. I must say, this song is "burned" into my brain as, at the time it was released, my girlfriend and I were "having troubles" and, funny as it seems, whenever this song was played on the radio we would literally "retreat" into separate corners of the room and just listen, lost in our thoughts. Although so long ago, this song, and that girl, are still seared into my memories...Bittersweet discovering this, but thanks!

There was a 90's version which I first heard and liked. I never thought this was a 70's song. Superb and haunting.

I'd visited the live version here before, but I see I need the original for my iPod! Probably his best song, even if it's among the best known, that and 'Wreck..."

How's this for an experience: play this version back-to-back with the Stars On 54 cover! Hard-to-believe its the same song! (The line about not wanting to read that book again is left out.)Johnny Cash recorded his version of this song litterly in the last days of his life...!
