Originally, Gayle McCormick was the lead singer for the 60's group "Smith". They had a hit song in 1969 called "Baby It's You". Eventually, Gayle went out on her own and released several singles. Here is the biggest of her solo releases called "It's A Cryin' Shame" which made it up to #44 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart in 1971. Check out the superb horn & string arrangements by the same guy that worked with the "Grass Roots"....Jimmie Haskell.

This song got alot of airplay back in 1971 ... I remember well. It may have gotten higher in the local charts in the various cities.

I went to the same high school with Gayle. She was a couple years ahead of me as I graduated Pattonville High School (Maryland Heights, MO) in 1969. She was a fabulous singer, even in high school. From what I hear she is still living today in Maryland Heights, MO. What a shame she didn't continue......voices like that just don't happen very often!

This song was in heavy rotation on 95 WKAZ in Charleston, WV. It was my favorite song for a LONG time, too, and one of the first records I ever bought. Gayle should have been huge. Just another example of the music industry overlooking a fantastic talent. I've gotten many hours of enjoyment listening to this song. Thanks, Gayle!

I grew up in Overland,MO. in northwest St.Louis county and my mom and dad knew Gayle McCormick briefly she had joined a prayer group after the hits stopped my dad Joe Wuertenberg told me she seemed really depressed not having the hits I had heard from people in St.Louis they would see her in bars and if someone tried to approach her they'd be stopped by biker type male friends of hers saying "Please do not bother Ms.McCormick turn around and go elsewhere!" I heard she would be strung out bad on drugs it was obvious but if I were making hit records and they stopped,Even though her only real hit was her cover version of "Baby it's you" with her group "The Smith" a 60's band not the same band in the 80's with Morrissey different band called smith, I did not know Ms.McCormick I was very little and did accompany mom and dad to these prayer meetings which had to been Catholic which I denounce my Catholic upbringing and I denounce the Catholic religion cause it goes against all what the scriptures actually quote Jesus saying the only way to God is through me he did not say Mary, getting off topic,Anyway I like this song!

I think Gayle's voice, attitude, and looks were as good as it gets. When it's all said and done she made everything she sang on sound good. Look at the views and thumbs up's! Gayle if you are out there, you've got staying power! Have a great Holiday:)

I remember this song very well.I had graduated from Ill. State and been invited to join my Uncle Sam to become a Combat Corpsman and Operating Rm. Tech. as we had many casualties and dependants that needed our services in those days..I read your tribute to Gayle and commend you for a wonderful, humble and sincere commentary, on a long and beautiful friendship. She seemed to be a very warm and vivacious gal very much fun to be with and in need of a hug here and there. What a great career U also.had.

This song definitely deserved a much better chart fate!! It should have gone, at best, the Top 20!!

Every town has its talk station, all playing the same syndicated blab. A station like WWWE was one of a kind.

Other performers covered this song later in the 70's; the Grass Roots in 1975 and Cher a year later. I don't think either released it as a single, but I remember hearing Cher's version over WWWE (3-W-E,) a lite-pop station from Cleveland that played album tracks and had real personality DJS. Now it's just another right wing talk station.
