"Oh, the blues aint' nothing but a good man feeling sad." Frank Hutchison (1897-1940), has been described the first white country musician to record blues & to record slide guitar. He is playing the slide, lap style in G open tuning. Hutchison was a miner with injuries, and started with his music career. He learned a lot of his blues from a friend, black singer & guitarist, Bill Hunt. He is singing "Cannonball Blues" from "Old -Time Mountain Blues - Rural Classics 1927-1939" which was released in 2003. I am proud of this West Virginia native! Hope you enjoy his early slidework.

Someone wrote: "But the point is that it was NOT considered 'negro' music..." Well, wrong! This was considered "Negro"-style music, and Frank played it because he liked to play "Negro"-style music.

"Frank Hutchison... has been described the first white country musician to record blues" I don't know where these things get started, but Henry Whitter was recording blues a couple years before Hutchison was, for instance.

Koos Delarey's point is mostly well made, except for the word "liberals". The men who created and exploited categories like "race" and "hillbilly" (Peer, Walker, Satherley, Calaway, etc.) were basically salesmen with purely commercial agendas -- selling records, acquiring copyrights -- and the categories were tools for achieving those ends. There was nothing "liberal" about it.

"He had guts to do this at a time when this was "Negro" playing and he was in an area that was not too welcoming to blacks." But the point is that it was NOT considered "negro" music until northern liberals, seeking to market it to a northern audience, created a "race records" section and referred to blacks as "blues" musicians, while whites making the same kind of music were referred to as "Hillbilly musicians". Originally it was called folk music, taken from British folk songs centuries old.

Yes, and it's OLD! Isn't he a great slide guitarist? He had guts to do this at a time when this was "Negro" playing and he was in an area that was not too welcoming to blacks. I'm proud of him. I'm proud to be from his state! Thanks so much for commenting. I know you are busy. I'm sorry I missed your comment ealier. My best, Moppet

Dear Mr.Ed, you give me too much credit! I know what I like in music, but don't know all these facts. I won't put music up until I read my inserts or go online. I don't want to be a total idiot & I also like to learn and let others learn too if they wish. I don't know this stuff usually until it goes online! Isn't his slide great for a white guy in the mountains of West Virginia back in the 20's? I'm really impressed with him. My best, Moppet
