Always a beautiful sound from the 5th Dimension, in the 60s we used to listen to a mix of songs on WHB from Kansas City and soul music was among of my favorites. It was not unusual to hear ads from payday loan outfits like beneficial, then maybe Rodger Miller and honky tonk style stuff, the Beatles and other British bands, and an assortment of Detroit tunes all mixxed in together. One day I informed Mom that her favorite singer Charlie Pride was not white and suddenly I was banned from transistor radio listening at the table. Songs like these were like a soothing ointment as I matured and went into the military where I 'discovered' the band War made me a few more friends than I had before. Music allowed me to feel the similarity between my poor white upbringing and some of the neighbors who were seldom seen at local social gatherings. To avoid the punishments for listenin I used an earpiece and listened late at night ..when the radio waves from St. Louis brought more great songs. Shhhhh...MoTown is calling. MoTown was like a real Voice of America for many people.
