Today's Memory

A happy birthday to :Sean Feargal Sharkey (1958) is a singer from Northern Ireland who first found fame as the lead vocalist of pop punk band The Undertones, who had seven UK top 40 hits, including "Teenage Kicks" (1978), "Jimmy Jimmy" (1979). "My Perfect Cousin" (1980) and "Wednesday Week" (1980). As lead singer of The Assembly, he had a UK number four hit with "Never Never" (1983). His solo hits include the UK number one "A Good Heart" (1985) and the UK top ten hit "You Little Thief" (1986).Since moving away from performing in the early 1990s, he has performed various roles supporting the UK's commercial music industry, winning several awards and honours for his work in that area.Feargal Sharkey - Listen To Your Father (1984)Listen to Your Father" is pop vocalist Feargal Sharkey's first single as a solo artist, released in 1984. The single's two tracks did not feature on Sharkey's self titled 1985 debut album Feargal Sharkey. The single was the first release of Zarjazz Records, owned by ska/pop band Madness. Zarjazz was a sub-label of Virgin Records who released the single through themselves outside of the UK. Zarjazz was also the label that released the last singles from Madness until the band originally split by 1986.The a-side of the single "Listen to Your Father" was written by Madness's trumpeter and backing vocalist Carl Smyth. The b-side "Can I Say I Love You" was written by Smyth and Feargal, remaining exclusive to the single. The b-side is also known as "For Without You".The single peaked at #23 in the UK upon release.A promotional video was created for the song. Sharkey performed the song on popular UK music show Top of The Pops along with members of Madness as backing musicians. Madness members Smyth and Mark Bedford appeared with Sharkey on UK show "Saturday Starship" to promote the single and the Zarjazz label. They were interviewed by Tommy Boyd.On 24 November 1985, the song was performed live at the Hammersmith Odeon, London, during Madness' tour to promote their "Mad Not Mad" album. Sharkey performed lead vocals, with Madness singer Suggs introducing Sharkey as "Mr Teenage Kicks" which referred to the hit song from Sharkey's ex-band The Undertones. This was the only time the song was played live.

I often wonder how Madness would of done if they had of released this themselves. Whether they didn't think it was good enough, it didn't work out, or to showcase the new 'Zarjazz' label I'm not sure. Legend goes that it was a track that didn't make it on the '7' album in '81, so was going spare. The theme would of fitted in very well with 'Rise & Fall', but sound wise it was too upbeat. A demo of the Madness version is on here, but was there a full production ever made? Maybe someone knows...

I still can't work out if Feargal took himself seriously or not. If he did then he really ought to have consulted a choreographer because his movements were rather Ian Curtis to my eyes!

Does anyone know if Langer & Winstanley produced this, sounds a bit more poppy/commercial than usual Madness production
