This is a sad version of Ricky Nelson's recording in all ways I hate to say it but Fabian had no talent although he could sing better than me but that's not saying much

Like the faster pace, but his vocal really suffers.

RH - Sweet dreams are made of this - Who am I to disagree? I travel the world - And the seven seas - Everybody's looking for something. Listen RH - like a string alone.

I'm pretty sure I've already said it, but I love Rick Nelson's music...I only prefer this and the Cascades' "For Your Sweet Love" to his versions...in no way am I claiming Fabian was anywhere near an equal, only that he doesn't completely deserve the bad reputation he seems to have

The point I keep trying to make is the arrangements on Fabian's best records (few as they might be, and this is certainly one) were specifically designed to cover up his flaws as best as possible...Rick certainly came off more sincere in early clips (and frankly, Ossie was as responsible for creating him as Bob Marcucci was Fabian and Frankie Avalon) but Fabian played the audience as well as anyone...but that was the idea, wasn't it..

Rick Nelson could sing. Fabian could not

And, while I can't possibly argue Rick's talent, Ozzie did buy the best session men and backup singers (the Jordanaires, quite often), money could buy...at least the results were generally exceptional

To each his own. I just kind of feel that those who promoted Fabian were promoting sex appeal rather than musical talent. Rick Nelson came from a musical family (Dad was a bandleader, Mom a soloist). Both were hunks, one just had more musical chops....in my opinion.

This version is actually before Rick's...I know I'm gonna get plenty of argument with this statement, but IMO Fabian in general was a bit underrated...as I noted earlier, back in the day, producers and arrangers knew how to get the best out of their teen idols (I'd rather hear this than 99.9 percent of today's crap, honestly)...and I do love Rick Nelson in general...just prefer this one

On this day in 1960 {March 12th} Fabian performed "String Along" and the b/w side "About This Thing Called Love" on the ABC-TV program 'Dick Clark's Saturday Night Beech-Nut Show'... One month earlier on February 22nd "String Along" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #39 and spent 8 weeks on the Top 100... At the time of this appearance on 'Beech-Nut' show Fabian, aka Fabiano Anthony Forte, had celebrated his 17th birthday just 35 days earlier on February 6th...

Teen idols are manufactured by definition...at least Fabian and Frankie Avalon and the like cut their sides flaws and all...Justin Bieber and the like don't even have that level of humanity...
