He was not in the best of health around this time, and Francis Robinson noted on a Caruso LP that his voice on this recording was a glimpse into the Caruso half voice - more nostalgic than anything.( to paraphrase ) A still luscious tone of better days does occasionally shine through..

This has always been one of my favorites. Caruso was wonderful on songs. This is an excellent example of those he recorded slipping in & out of his sotto voce, "half voice" style. (Another example is, "A Vucchella," ("A Little Posy,"where he uses the technique to it's best advantage.) If it's the Caruso power you like, try "L'Alba Separa Dalla Luce L'ombra" (Then find Bjoerling and listen to his excellent, adoring, imitation....)

This recording always was sentimental in that it showed the great man, who was ill at the time,,singing subpar.., This, according to the liner notes from the old double LP set " Best Of Caruso" released decades and decades ago... Francis Robinson said it was the Caruso voice rarely heard on record;;less than peak, and just a glimpse of what it was

ENRICO CARUSO (February 25, 1873 – August 2, 1921) was an Italian tenor. He sang to great acclaim at the major opera houses of Europe and North and South America, appearing in a wide variety of roles from the Italian and French repertoires that ranged from the lyric to the dramatic.

@31operafan Good, then! "singing from the soul" is a great way of putting it.

@31operafan As much as I always enjoy your comments, I'm not sure if I understood this one fully. Are you suggesting that Caruso sang in a certain way to please the public? I'm very sure he just sang his heart - and that was what pleased the public !

The thing about Caruso was that he sang for others, not himself.

Inserire un video di Bocelli in risposta a Caruso è una bestemmia. Vergogna!
