Vinyl B-side from 1982. This rockier version than the "Jump Up!" album version appeared on Elton's singles "All Quiet on the Western Front" (UK) and "Ball & Chain" (US) in 1982. Lyrics by Bernie Taupin.

I would point to "Ego" as the biggest example of that.

Thanks for uploading! Elton really needs to release a "Rare Masters, Vol 2" to collect all these lost B-sides from the late 70's and 80's!~

The shot you refer to was taken at the Manchester Apollo in mid-November 1982. Unfortunately I dont know what songs they sang together for sure, but I think it was Saturday Nights Alright For Fighting, or maybe one of the old rock'n'roll songs. Not sure.

I have that same recording (12/15/1982 at the Hammersmith)! To me, Elton didn't sound too pissed off (maybe annoyed at most), and seemed to have fun throughout the show: "This song is applied to Nigel when I get my hands on him--it's called Better Off Dead." The absolute funniest thing about the recording, is that since Nigel isn't there, Elton sets ALL the tempos to the songs (not a good idea if Elton's got Colombian powder in his nose)! Pinball Wizard is like 4 times as fast as the record!

I think this version came from the "21 at 33/Fox" sessions.

BTW I just recently got a copy of the concert from those days at Hammersmith, the show when Nigel Olsson didn't show up and the band had to performed without drums. Elton is pissed (in the American sense) as Hell, and it's the same show when Elton accidentally hit someone in the front row with his piano bench, and then screamed at her for making a fuss! Not a great quality recording, but interesting to hear those "historic" moments, plus the band playing without Nigel...

Elton's costume says 1982! I would guess December 1982 when he did many shows at Hammersmith. I don't know of any audio of Freddie joining EJ in concert. That would be nice! Let me know if you find it!

When was that picture with Freddie Mercury taken? Is there any audio of that concert?

This was my fave song on "Jump Up". I played this over and over again... Although their styles are rather different, in some ways Billy Joel had a similar "sound" from 1977-1984 as Elton...

@brianxyz This version is quite cool, but the lyrics are about the good old soul and R'n'B times, so the Temptations/Four Tops like version on the album makes much more sense in combination with the words. I think both versions have their appeal, and I can imagine that this one totally rocked live.

Another great example of someone choosing the wrong song or wrong version to include on an album. This version sounds very similar to what they did on the Jump Up! tour. Hopefully one day a concert from that great tour will be released on DVD or whatever format we're using at the time to watch videos!
