Idk how I never heard this song. I just learned of its existence at a local concert. One of the guys was taking about Roy Rogers, because he's from here in Scioto county Ohio, the guy Jacob Tolliver, is doing a version of this song. I can't wait to hear it.

Bernie was great at creating entirely separate pictures via various characters. He’d often use a particular character to speak about others in general. Like Candle in the Wind wasn’t just about Monroe but celebrity icons that died in their prime. Very few writing teams as talented as Bernie and Elton.

Listening to this made me, a 70 year old, tear up. A regret of my life is that I never met Roy. When I was a little one, I was convinced that someday I would ride the range with Roy and Dale. Of course this never happened except in my heart. Thanks, Elton. And thanks for posting, sydlivy.

What's insane about this album between Elton and Bernie is how mature the topics are on almost every song, well beyond their age at the time. I weep when I hear modern songs with no soul...

I wonder if this song would have been written if Bernie Taupin hadn’t listened to Marty Robbins.

When I hear this song it makes me sad yet happy of days gone by. Sit in the dark with the fire dying down and the dog asleep at your feet— - - it doesn’t get any better than that.
