I can see very wellThere's a boat on the reef with a broken backAnd I can see it very wellThere's a joke and I know it very wellIt's one of those that I told you long agoTake my word, I'm a madman don't you know?Once a fool had a good part in the playIf it's so would I still be here todayIt's quite peculiar in a funny sort of wayThey think it's very funny everything I sayGet a load of him, he's so insaneYou better get your coat dear, it looks like rainWe'll come again next Thursday afternoonThe in-laws hope, they'll see you very soonBut is it in your conscience that you're afterAnother glimpse of the madman across the waterI can see very wellThere's a boat on the reef with a broken backAnd I can see it very wellThere's a joke and I know it very wellIt's one of those that I told you long agoTake my word, I'm a madman don't you know? The ground's a long way downBut I need moreIs the nightmare blackOr are the windows paintedWill they come again next weekCan my mind really take itWe'll come again next Thursday afternoonThe in-laws hope they'll see you very soonBut is it in your conscience that you're afterAnother glimpse of the madman across the waterSongwritersJOHN, ELTON / TAUPIN, BERNIERead more: Elton John - Madman Across The Water Lyrics | MetroLyrics

Fine song only why didn't he do more like this. Madman is far and away his finest song and album before he became a bubblegum circus act (Elton fans will hack me up for this). The strings are a highlight with the final cords being filled with wonderful fifths on top of major cords. Just great shit.

this song is just magic - takes me back to a great time in my youth - I feel so fortunate to have been born at a time when we waited for albums to come out and listened to them alone and with our friends - we learned each and every song - we didn't just glean our favorites and listen to them over and over again alone in our heads. I also loved the 11/17/70 album.

Purchased the vinyl just before Christmas 1971 and played the hell out of it, all through the Holidays. Complexity of the sound, made the song a gem, as was the whole Album. Easily would have been a #1 AM Radio Top 40 single, if it were not for the length of the song. Had heard for sometime, that this was originally suppose to go on "Tumbleweed Connection". Glad it didn't. Hard to believe this Album was more popular here in U.S., than in England.
