An IMMENSELY popular video from my last account, I know there`s plenty of people out there who`ll be glad this is back up.

"true love is a rose

behind glass that's locked and kept closed

maybe just for me

'cos my soul's been attacked

and shattered by tough love, bad love

i bought mine on the street

true love it just can't be beat

i felt so complete

married to heavenly bodies above

and each night i'd look up

at a bright honeymoon

'cos it sure seemed built to last

and even after my honeymoon passed

i kept right on it man

like a ghost

to the house it was haunting

day after day

i'd steal with my true love away

to some hide out left undisturbed

we could do what we wanted

but i started to feel like a liar

saying i love you

mad in love and at me

there's no in between

came on and on

i found you can't make a stand

i'm her hired hand

i have to do harm

one day i got sick

she played me a nasty old trick

said i need cigarettes

walked round the block

caught a cab

stayed gone for too long

and my love had gotten so strong

just to try being back on my own

i had to go to rehab

all i need is a safe place to bleed

is this where it's at

having no chance

steps in a dance

your whole life's been in combat

now i'm the king of the ward

'cos i'm good and i swallow my sword

and puke it out

for the doctors to write a new prescription

tranquil as a dove

people that have lost their true love

all seem to fit the same description

i feel cold, useless and old

I wish i was no one

take me home my love

take me home today

take me out of this place

take me home with you today"

Does anyone know whether this was produced by Jon Brion or if it was David McDonnell?

Why isn't Steven Paul Smith given his global due as a guitar player, arranger, producer, lyricist, composer and singer? He is phenomenal. I must say "is", owing to Joe Strummer's notion of "through music we can live forever". His music is scenic. One "sees" beauty in listening to his masterpieces. He threw it all out there. Unbelievable and amazing man.

I just wish he went to proper rehab. His death devastated me. Met him twice and he was so nice and loving. He wasn't an atheist so I hope there is a god and he his happy. Best singer/songwriter of all time. And a beautiful guy.

@ Feadpool - Jon Brion should also understand that Elliott forgetting the lyrics of Say Yes added some really classic comic relief from Elliott on that show.. I doubt that was the fall of their friendship... as Brion went on to try and help produce 'From a Basement..' Elliott was probably just getting so messed up at the time, Brion couldn't deal with it any longer.. it was probably painful to see such talent crumble..

I am glad people are posting songs by Elliott. I miss him. I wish he was still around. Hearing all these songs means a lot to me. Thank you.

i'm glad this version exists, but the crystal ballroom live version has always been my favorite. in my completely subjective personal opinion, this is one of elliott's most impressive compositions, and also one of his most flawed (especially some lyrics, the rehab part, but also some of the chord turnarounds are a bit strange). it's almost as if he bit off more than he could chew with this song, which is saying a lot considering i believe 100% that he is the most gifted songwriter to have lived thus far.

It sounds like he was just two or three takes away from getting a master copy of this remarkable song. Someone was speculating as to what this song is about. Like most of Elliott Smith's more involved pieces it's about a number of things. One of his best.

relsismada: What the hell do you know about heroin addiction? Why are all people such professional knowers on what Elliott was going through?
