I really get tired of the Beatles comparison, or more so, the people who claim he basically copied their style.. Look, I realize the Beatles were a HUGE Influence on Elliott Smith. But his countless masterpieces truly stand on their own, as very original, one of a kind works. I mean, what he achieved in some ways goes beyond the Beatles. Just because he didn't reach world wide stardom doesn't mean these pieces aren't truly original. I hear the Beatles influence (I've been a fan of Elliott's for over ten years), but more than anything I hear Elliott Smith as an original artist where the work truly stands on its own. There's relation, but at the same time there's none.

Was this the last song he recorded? Of all his tracks, this may be his most autobiographical. What a song.

I think it's so wonderful that Elliott Smith has helped so many people, including myself, through tough times! Thank you Elliott!

Why wasn't this released on Either/Or? New Moon? It's a brilliant song, both lyrically and captures Elliott's vast musical talent...being that he word've recorded each instrument in this. Not to mention the harmonies....I never met him, yet he has been my reason for turning the engine off a number of times when I really wanted it all to stop....verging on unconsciousness realising that I might not see him on the other side...I can't live without his music. It's kept me alive and well. If I were religious...I am spiritual...he is my God. Not as a fan, rather an individual, a loner, a musician who can't connect with people. His music has kept me going. I really hope he is in a better place.

I read that shortly before ES died he burned a CD of 16 different versions of this song and would drive around listening to each one to find which he liked best

This song is amazing. It is one of my favorites of his. It feels so autobiographical for Smith yet it is so easy to relate to in my life and I am sure the same for others. Sometimes, with songs like this, I feel like he went in my head, took out everything I wanted to express, and made it beautiful the way few people could. RIP Elliott.

I remember five years ago... face pressed down into my knees sobbing as I went through heroin withdrawal. I had this and "Can't Make A Sound" playing on repeat. My partner at the time said that listening to so much Elliott would just make my misery worse. But the feeling of realizing someone you so admire, who created such BEAUTY in the world went through the same exact thing I had gone through... it truly touched me and helped me get through those awful moments. Thank you, Elliott.

When I was 15 years old, I heard Elliott for the first time..10 years later, knowing I would never get to see him live it still breaks my heart but there will never be another musician even comparable. He was one of us.. a fragile human being, extremely intelligent.. who had more talent than all the musicians alive today put together. I can't bring him back, but we can all keep his music alive. RIP Elliott.

Hey, just wanted to thank you for talking to me a year ago when I was basically in hell. Things are much better now and even though it was a small thing, every little bit helps. Much appreciated.
