Song Playing - Southern Belle

Artist - Elliott Smith

Album - Elliott Smith

Lyrics:

Killing a southern belle

Is all you know how to do

That, and give other people hell

It's what they expect from you too

But I wouldn't have you how you want

I don't want to walk around

I don't even want to breathe

I live in a southern town

Where all you can do is grit your teeth

But I wouldn't have you how you want

How come you're not ashamed of what you are?

And sorry that you're the one she got?

Ain't nobody looking now

Nobody nothing's said

No one's about to shout

Nobody's seeing red

But I wouldn't have you how you want

You're killing a southern belle

Killing a southern belle

Killing a southern belle

I thought it was "But I wouldn't have you how you are" which also works but I have never been very good with lyrics

This was the very first Elliott Smith song I ever heard. I've been in love since.

this song has an eerie quality to it but also sexy. Very cool.

How are all of his songs like his best songs. Elliot smith blows my mind

Also, its tuned a whole step down, so the octave in the beginning is played on the open C string (normally D) and the A string (normally B) third fret, as part of an open D shape chord

the intro starts with a c major chord, the rest of the song is in C minor, though.

Hm... I think you're correct. After hearing it closely it does sound like "looking" instead of "talking". Many thanks for the correction! The description has been updated immediately, enjoy ^_^

I believe where it says "Ain't nobody talking now" he's actually saying "Ain't nobody looking now"
