Here's the army

That you mowed to the ground

And the bodies you left lying around

Talking it out

The last hour

I'm through trying now

It's a big relief

I'll be staying down

Where no-one else gonna give me grief

Mess me around

Just make it over

Your opinion was the law of the land

A single thing that I could always understand

I lived it out from hour to hour

The only thing that never really changed

You ran me all around

And dragged me down

At the end of the day

Don't keep me around

Just make it over

I've been thinking of the things that I missed

Situations that I passed up for this

One way love I took for ours

I'm through trying now

It's a big relief

I'll be staying down

I wasn't good at being a thief

More like a clown

Make it over

This song is brilliant and a 3 part story...easy really if you know his story: First: A convo with his alchoholic mum....she killed an army. Second Stepdad is a ball buster....hated that mofo Third: Realization that he cared more for his mother than she did for him and the wasted energy he spent on 'trying to make it work' with her. So many big 'relief's' in this song...but they add up to emotional relief or finally saying fuck it

It is the first time I have heard this song and I am sitting here crying, but its a good thing, i obviously needed the release. I really like the way you explained this incredibly powerful song

I always put him rt there with Lennon. But Elliott digs much deeper into the battered part of the heart, the blackened n abused shunned part of the soul

Back when he was alive and people complained that music was no good anymore I knew that they were wrong.

I beg to differ. There is a live version on youtube that he totally nails.

No matter how depressing his songs are, i can always listen to them and get a sense of belonging. A sense of love in this cruel, cruel world.

This guy was a genius, a beautiful soul, and is still probably (to me at least) the biggest secret in music. His music is and always will be SO real, HONEST and PERFECT,...... I honestly think this guy is up there with John Lennon and all the other big names in music. His music though, was 100 percent CLEAN of ANY bullshit, which is amazing.

This is one of the most beautiful people to ever live. Destroyed by such an ugly "disease". R.I.P. Steven "Elliott" Smith.

Beautiful song. Makes my heart ache, but in a good way, like Elliott always does to me. Good job with the video too. Zero dislikes, damn straight.

seeing her cry in the first scene (after already watching it once) made me realize that the relativity of our hierarchy of needs is hidden from us from a lack of awareness of life because we have limited ourselves into only our "acclimation", and view the negative side of our lives as equally half to the positive. certainly she is better off than the children in haiti who may be smiling now
