I was a kid in New Orleans during the early fifties, when Eddie Fisher was "making his bones." He appealed to my father, which is saying something, since my father was born in 1910. I remember asking my father if Eddie Fisher was a tenor. Of course he said, 'Yes, he's a tenor.'In a sense, I guess, Fisher represents the last gasp of pop music before Rock 'n' Roll took over. Sinatra was able to keep on the charts after 1955 with such songs as "My Way" and "Strangers in the Night," and Perry Como kept making hits such as "And I Love her So." But Fisher more or less flashed onto the scene like a Roman candle in the early fifties and then was no more.The ephemeral quality of Eddie Fisher is seen in his being given the shaft by Liz Taylor. Wasn't Debbie Reynolds, who lost her shirt running a Las Vegas theatre of some kind, in there somewhere with Fisher? Here today and gone tomorrow -- This was the nature of these people. Talented? Oh yeah! Stable in their relationships? Nope.'Lady of Spain' is one of those songs that hangs around forever, like 'O Sola Mio.' But the song that always comes immediately to my mind when I think of Eddie Fisher is "O My Papa." That song sort of symbolizes Fisher's career. This was the dawn of The Sixties generation, when 'O My Papa' was to become a square concept. When Liz dumped Eddie for Richard Burton, it was as if she suddenly realized: "Hey, you're that square who sang 'O My Papa.'
