I did this show in college and it changed my life. Our director did NOT want us to watch the movie because it is NOTHING like the original musical. The musical is beautiful in so many ways. The songs in the movie are not even the same as the original music which was sweet and simple. That in much more beautiful than all the bells and whistles.

My two cents on the Caissie Levy vs Cheryl Barnes discussions. Both sing it well. I have never seen the pay HAIR, but I bet Miss Levy's version advances the plot (I wish the music had been a little quieter, though) and it builds with that idea. Miss Barnes' version was in a straight knock your socks off style. If I were watching he show I might prefer Miss Levy's version, but just as a number, I prefer Miss Barnes' version.

Necro but.... The movie is not the original version, wtf. The creators of Hair disowned the movie. The original musical is beautiful in its critique of societal attitudes. The movie is just profiting off of the songs and hype.

In the original version of the musical (in the movie of 1979) it is not Sheila singing this beautiful song, but the wife of Lafayette, because he doesn't care about her and their son, but about strangers. He wants to send her home, but his friends convince him to take her and child with them I personally prefer the other version of the musical and in my opinion Chery Barnes performance of the song is ways better...

so basically we shouldn't support a musical or buy it on itunes because you don't like it? amazing logic. i like cheryl barnes version as well, but if you don't think caissie doesn't have any emotion in this you're not listening properly.

@baik007 I'd think the true spirit of Hair would be celebrating the difference of interpretation of both artists. ;o) Incidentally, the stage production (with the beautiful Caissie Levy, singing here) changed my life. The movie version did not. <3

slick and perfectly performed and pretty much without heart compared to the version Cheryl Barnes sang in the 1979 movie... and which has obviously been removed (along with all the other great clips from the movie) to feature this edition. Is this the true spirit of HAIR? let's all NOT buy it on iTunes...
