Dr Hook's great song, Carry me Carrie.

second street and broadway

sitting in a doorway

head held in his hands

looked to all the world

like he was praying

foot wrapped in an old rag

bottle in a brown bag

I saw him try to stand

then i heard the words that he was saying

he said

[chorus]

come on carrie carry me a little farther

come on carrie carry me one more mile

I dont know where its leading to

but I know I can make it if I lean on you so

come on carrie, carry me a little

I carried you so now carry me a little

come on carrie carry me.. a little while yeah

He stumbled to his feet and he staggered down the street

to the window of a five and dime

He stopped and laughed a while at his reflection

Then i heard him shouting something 'bout a mountain

he could surely climb, if she was only there to point

the right direction

(but she aint no.. no she aint nooooo)

[chorus]

got ta' carry me! carry me carrie!

got ta' carry me

Maybe carrying him left her broken and unable to carry him another inch. And when she couldn't carry him another inch, he left her sobbing and broken and moved on to the next world without her...

I have never been a big music lover. But for some reason I loved many of the songs, that my father liked. Probably a little father and daughter bonding there... :)

Why is everyone so sympathetic to Carrie? The whole point is that he loved and supported her, but when it was time for her to return that support, she bailed. That's why he's now an alcoholic bum with only one shoe. But he still has that image of her as some now-unattainable perfection, because that lie is the only way he can cling to a tiny slice of happiness and keep from stepping in front of a bus, at least until the bottle is empty. He even knows it's a lie, because she's obviously not there, but he turns it into his refrain in a desperate attempt to convince himself. I think this is even sadder than Sylvia's Mother.
