The sense of loss in this Bacharach/David masterpiece make it almost too much to hear, as with their "Take a Message to Michael." I have never understood why Lou Johnson's earlier version of the latter (called "Martha") wasn't a hit, other than that he wasn't that well known then. And it's also odd that although this 1960's songwriting duo's works were the least dated (other than Lennon/McCartney's), their hit streak ended pretty much exactly at the end of the decade.9 years ago
