Hush:

"Hush" is a cover of a song originally performed by Billy Joe Royal a year earlier, penned by Joe South. It is arguably, along with "Mandrake Root", the heaviest song on the album. The band would release it as their first single in June 1968. The single, to some surprise, turned out to be a massive hit overseas, reaching #4 in the U.S. and #2 in Canada. It was largely ignored in Britain, however, where the Parlophone label chose to promote "Help!" more heavily. "Hush" and "Mandrake Root" are today the only songs off this album that are still played live.

Heard this off an old-school rock record my stepdad had some years ago----I thought it kicked ass, and it still does. I didn't know Deep Purple has another lead singer before Ian Gillen, so this was interesting to hear. Very blues and gospel-influenced, which is why I liked it. I thought it was an early '70's tune, though.
