Interesting song obviously it's about the "cruise" missile. But I have had a few relationships that this song illustrates. Typical of David Gilmour this is a bit deeper than first observation.

To be honest, I was in favour of counterbalancing the USSR's strange move to deploy modern SS 20's by the deployment of similar weapons by NATO. Of course it was a unnecessary waste of money on both sides, but it made negotiations with a quid pro quo possible, some years later. As a result, all the intermediate range nuclear weapons were destroyed. I don't think that would have been achieved, if NATO had unilaterally asked the USSR to destroy their SS 2O"s, it simply doesn't work that way. Having said that, I really enjoy the funny lyrics with double entendre's like "should a close friendship as this fall out" of this song. Really a very creative way of saying NO to what NATO thought was best. And much more fun than the sometimes stubborn "good intentions" but also somewhat short sighted of some "peaceniks" as they were called then. I never dreamt of nuking the USSR, and I am sure the "Russians love their children too". I was pro deployment, because I hoped it would help reach a disarmement agreement. And since superpowers are very proud, that means that both need elements to be able to claim afterwards how good they have worked during negotiations, and didn't return home empty handed. I don't think the SS 20's would have been removed AND destroyed without the GLCM's and Pershings. A sad thing, as this was completely wasted money that could have been used in much better ways. But I'm sure that if NATO wouldn't have spend it on cruise missiles, that money saved wouldn't have gone to social programs but to extra bombers or submarines. Let's not be naieve, shall we... But, as said, hats off to Gilmour for this nice song with its funny lyrics...
