The irony, of course, is that he appears to be playing to a wealthy audience, and they applaud enthusiastically. Were they even listening to the words, or had they already had too many glasses of wine to worry about it?

I hear you brother. Greed is fear-based, but there's reason to be afraid, when people are threatened with being deprived of the basic necessities of life. There's always violent revolution, if necessary, the main question is, how many of law enforcement and the military will side with the people, rather than those who pay their salaries. It could go either way, not everyone in the armed services agrees with the agenda of the wealthy. I hear that you care, and respect your concerns-they are real.

It won't be the greedy, rich guys who end up being herded into work camps and spending the rest of their (short, wretched) lives doing forced manual labor with shotgun-toting goons watching them! We're heading for a worldwide economic collapse and mega-depression, followed by a feudal "New World Order"; and as always it will be the poor who suffer and the rich who get to live with a modicum of comfort and dignity. My advice to you and anyone else reading this? Get your greedy on, while you can!

Yes, it's official: bjggjb is firmly under the Power of Gold, and the Devil got his his Soul. :O)) Reality check brother: a "human quality of life" has more to do with having a good heart, and living in harmony with the earth, than it does with having a lot of money, & fancy crap that you don't really need!! I understand about being practical, but "there's something about the song that disturbs you", & you might want to look at that. He's singing about GREED, not the basic necessities of life!!!

To Robert Strang: Methinks this song was "not" originally done by Hollies. "Tell My To My Face" is perhaps the tune you wre thinking of. 'Nuff said.

This song was originally done by the Hollies. But Dan and his musical partner Tim Weisberg resurrected it in the 1970's.

Interesting how this song knocks greed, and the accumulation of wealth; so very, very 70's. After the dollar crumbles, the next few decades are going to be horrible for those who weren't "under the power of gold." Only the rich will get to enjoy a human quality of life in all likelihood. (Spent the last 15 years partying, playing video games, watching movies and chasing women? Soon you're gonna wish you were making hay while the sun was shining.)

Hearing it for the first time on the Ken Bruce show was exactly the same way as I did, so I had to look it up, and it sounds even better on repeats.

Hey Tim! Just stopping by to have a DF moment. That is Jim Photoglo singing background with Dan. I kept thinking that I recognized that voice. That may be Robert McKee on the right of Dan. Great song!
