Lyrics:

An only child

Alone and wild

A cabinet maker's son

His hands were meant

For different work

And his heart was known

To none --

He left his home

And went his lone

And solitary way

And he gave to me

A gift I know I never

Can repay

A quiet man of music

Denied a simpler fate

He tried to be a soldier once

But his music wouldn't wait

He earned his love

Through discipline

A thundering, velvet hand

His gentle means of sculpting souls

Took me years to understand.

The leader of the band is tired

And his eyes are growing old

But his blood runs through

My instrument

And his song is in my soul --

My life has been a poor attempt

To imitate the man

I'm just a living legacy

To the leader of the band.

My brothers' lives were

Different

For they heard another call

One went to chicago

And the other to st. paul

And I'm in colorado

When I'm not in some hotel

Living out this life I've chose

And come to know so well.

I thank you for the music

And your stories of the road

I thank you for the freedom

When it came my time to go --

I thank you for the kindness

And the times when you got tough

And, pap, I don't think i

Said 'i love you' near enough --

The leader of the band is tired

And his eyes are growing old

But his blood runs through

My instrument

And his song is in my soul --

My life has been a poor attempt

To imitate the man

I'm just a living legacy

To the leader of the band

I am the living legacy

To the leader of the band.

My ' Go To ' song every time i am upset. This song is my Dad, my Father, the Man who made me the man i am. He is still alive, the only reason i am still alive. We all have our stories, but the reason i listen to this song is deep. I want to say nobody understands, but i am sure there are some that do. My Dad is a man that everybody looks up to, the one who will help anyone when in need. Well... I am his son, i am not that man though. I can only look up to him, who created me, but i will never be him. I am weak, i dont help others, i am just not him. Life isnt fair, and that's my problem... I cant get over the hand i was dealt, i cant be my father, the man who didnt care about what was dealt to him, he just took life for what it is and made it better. So Dad, my Father: I will never be you, i can never be you. Thank you for making me, me, but i will never be you.

where are all the writers of songs who can play and carry soul and harmony in a way the words can be understood, and the meaning is timeless like gold, diamonds and all the stars, the sun and the moon?

I have always enjoyed the expression of his father's "thundering velvet hand", such a wonderful blend of words I think of often........another great musician gone too early. RIP Dan, your music still rocks!!

Happy Birthday Granpda! I miss you everyday, and I'm still playing my guitars and singing. Thank you for being my teacher, my inspiration, and the greatest man a grandson could ever know. Your music is still alive and I'll carry it with me for the rest of my life. R.I.P. Leader of the Band.

+Joseph Compnotta What I remember hearing was that his dad was the leader of the band at UCLA. I just had to check it out on Wikipedia. This is what it said "Lawrence Peter Fogelberg, a high school band director who spent most of his career at Peoria's Woodruff High School and Pekin High School."
