Still remember the first Christmas that I had in the UK.That was my first Christmas in the Western country, and it is the worst Christmas in my life. Christmas is meant to be a day that gathers all the people we love and have a super big meal in the warm house with romantic snow flicks outside the window. Unfortunately, I didn’t have friends who were still in the UK at that time. All of my friends are going back to HK/ Singapore/ Malaysia. Those warm Christmas advertisements became mockery. Those warm house gathering could only happen in my dream. When everyone was celebrating, I was crying in front of my anatomy books. Don’t try to take a walk in city center. You will end up with disappointment, cuz every shop will be closed, including supermarket, cinema, shopping centre, even restaurants. And after all, what is the point of paying £25 for a lonely Christmas dinner? Doesn’t really feel like Christmas at all.The worst thing was yet to come. Due to time difference, everyone in HK will sleep at 4pm (UK time). And technically, you can chat with no one after that horrible 4pm. So I decided to adjust my sleeping cycle, from UK time to HK time. It is not that difficult actually, cuz the sun in UK sets at 4PM as well. The difficult part is, you need to pretend to be fine. “I am fine.’’ was my frequently used sentence. You don’t want to cry in front of your family and friends, cuz they can’t do much, really. Meeting people through networking is different from meeting them face-to-face. And you can’t change that, unless you are the rich little shit that could fly back to your own country instantly. I felt so depressed when I realize skyping doesn’t help with my loneliness. Guess that’s the thing international students will learn. Learn how to survive on your own. Learn how to cope with your loneliness.
