My interpretation of the song, is that it's not specifically about soldiers, or war, but rather about those who have the capability to stand and protect who and what they love doing so. Not standing down to the threats that promise to destroy what they love and want to protect.

I know this song is about the USA and her struggles(even against Britain) but British soldiers were there with us on d-day fighting to protect against totalitarian ideas. I thank the Americans and British soldiers who secured my freedom.
