Chris, just when I think I'm done playing mandolin for the day, you always make me wanna pick it back up again. This album certainly gives me a new appreciation for Bach. As I think was your hope with this album. It's a masterpiece of a masterpiece.

This is fantastic! In response to the conversations about whether this was written for Violin or Lute...this piece is the 2nd movement - Fugue from the 1st violin sonata BWV1001. The Lute version is BWV1000, very similar but with a markedly different opening. I'd recommend listening to Julian Bream's performance on youtube.

From someone who grew up playing Bach on the violin, I think it sounds awesome. It makes you want to go listen to more Bach and more of this. What could be be better?

mainly the fact that, as a classical player I played this piece, and that the fugua was called BWV 1001 for Luthe. I have not searched the internet to get my answer, but when you play the piece and see the way it is written, there are clearly part of the piece that do not seem written for the violin. In way of harmony, of sustains, and resonnance this piece looks more like it's been written for a plucked string instrument. After that, it seems that the luthe work stops at BWV1000. This is1001

It is up to taste which instrument brings the best out of the piece. But since Bach wrote it for Violin it seems quite a leap to me to me to suggest that the piece is actually closer to what Bach had in mind on the Mandolin then the Violin, after all, Bach played the Violin himself!
