During his 2015 visit to the Fretboard Journal, Chris Eldridge (Punch Brothers) performed two John Hartford tunes for us, including this cover of "Let Him Go On, Mama" from Hartford's 'Mark Twang' album. Eldridge had a little fun improvising an extended intro on this take.

Critter is playing a Martin-style dreadnought built by Japanese builder Hiroshi Suda, the same instrument he uses for most Punch Brothers concerts.

Eldridge called Hartford "the most important" during our podcast interview with him:

Such a great musician. Super nice guy too. I got to pick with him after a show he played in my hometown. He'll treat anybody like a friend.

Man I love his playing (and singing). Wasn't that intro "Whistlin' Rufus?"

I'd never heard Chris sing before so my jaw literally dropped when I heard his voice. There's a kind of smokiness to it and the lyrics were sung with such tenderness and affection (even if he did forget the third verse!) I was truly blown away. Why doesn't he sometimes sing lead for Punch Bros.? He's got the perfect voice!!

Very nice. But I'm surprised you guys didn't credit the intro to improvising on Cherokee Shuffle…sweet take on a classic.
