RARE footage of the group from August 1980 performing "The American Dream" from 'Chicago XIV' (14). Chris Pinnick is on guitar. Marty Grebb is the 4th member of the horn section. During shows he also played guitar, keys, percussion and sang backing vocals. He never officially joined the group. He and Laudir De Oliveira would depart in the fall of '81. This move was shortly followed by Bill Champlin joining CHICAGO.

Enjoy!

@gambler108 I really, really would like to see/hear a live performance of material from this era; particularly a live rendering of Manipulation. The meter changes in that song makes A Hit By Varese look like a Sousa march.

Walter Yetnikoff was upset with the band over dumping guitarist/singer/songwriter Donnie Dacus. The late 70's/early 80's would not have been a good period for Chicago under any circumstances. The popular musical climate was just wrong for them at the time. Prior to that they had been a mainstream rock group who crossed over into Adult Contemporary. After this record, when David Foster got hold of them, they became an Adult Contemporary act who occasionally crossed over to mainstream.

@ceterababe Robert Lamm wrote most of the overtly political songs Chicago ever did--- A Song For Richard, While the City Sleeps, Mother, Dialogue, stuff like that. He had an astute, hard-hitting bite to his lyrics and a keen observational eye. So, naturally, this song was written by Jimmy Pankow.

Peter going thru slight David Bowie or Loverboy stag. Obviously had no mirrors at his house. Chris Pinnick awesome guitar player. Shows how good Chicago was, and still is. Attracts quality subs, sit-ins, and studio musicians.

@drummerboyjac According to the liner notes to the Rhino release, songs on XIV like "Manipulation" and "Thunder and Lightning" were written in code as a dig against Columbia records over monetary issues. Columbia retaliated by intentionally under-releasing copies of the album so that it would not sell well, and then, citing poor sales, were able to dump Chicago. It's hard to say how the album would have done released properly, but if you have a vinyl copy, that's rare.

Hi ChiKid ! Thanks for the post...well for ALL the posts. My son was laughing when he saw Cetera's hair but he couldn't deny PC had/has a terrific voice. Of course MY favorite is and always HAS BEEN Bobby's[ voice] Gosh but the triumverante of Lamm, Kath and Cetera was great wasn't it! Thank goodness for recordings in all formats so we can still see and hear them. Fantastic! Thanks again for your channel and all your work!

I got a copy of XIV on vinyl a couple of years ago and COULD NOT figure out why that album tanked. This song, as is the entire album in my opinion, is really great. It just doesn't make sense to me.

I like the hair. It has a fresh, new look to it. Back in 1980, it was very stylish!
