I have never seen a photo of Vince without his moustache.

I didn't hear this until the early 80s.  It sounded so fresh then I was surprised when I found out it was from 1963.   It still sounds fresh over 50 years later.  A true classic.

GOD! How this little tune sweeps me back over half a C. to my youth, when time stood still it seemed & ANYTHING seemed somehow possible! The melody 'dropped' into my musical mind box TODAY & of course good ole YT came up trumps by allowing me to relish it AGAIN with ease. Early 60s were a WONDERFUL time to have lived through when U were young. Never again will we see the like regrettably.

the jocks at WNEW-FM 102.7 used to play this in the later evening....after a long day in New York City listening to semi free form rock programming, it was a welcome sound...NOT because it was a break from 'rock', but a reflective piece one would play at the end of the day.....I MISS WNEW-FM 102.7 WHERE ROCK LIVES !!!!!!

Reminds me of dark autumn nights, wind whispering in the golden leaves of the trees, mysteries, and the expectant hush JUST before Halloween

I first heard this song on A.M radio in Lafayette, Louisiana --just entered high school, and was a big Ray Charles, Frankie Laine (ever heard "Cry of the Wild Goose"?) and Kingston Trio. But this song instantly rewired my music brain --the emotion of bittersweet before I'd ever heard the word --just the feeling in the sound. This was new --a new element to music! I wanted to play this song, so I could conjure the emotion. And of course I've been trying since '62 or '63 --progress has been rather slow, I think I may not make it to VG's level. But I still love to play it, and love to listen to it, and love to read y'all's delightful comments on ikt.

No one who comments seems to have any idea what inspired the song or makes it work.  "Black Orpheus" ("Orfeu Negro") was a 1959 Brazilian film, and it inspired the subsequent "Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus" album by Vince's trio, from which this song comes. It is the bossa nova elements that give the song much of its unique character.  Remove those in favor of the strictly jazz bits, and the tune becomes just another walking jazz bit from Vince, very cool of course, but not as catchy.  With the bossa nova parts, it becomes an overall masterpiece of popular songwriting, something new.  Yay Vince!  The shift in rhythmic styles makes the song work.

Very nice, and one of my all-time favorite "nostalgic" songs.It... Sounds Orchestral... to me.Q: Who created it as a quick "B" side of something they thought tasted better, before it even had any lyrics?Hint: It was Vince "the genius" in '62 who served it up first, and a few good WW2 buddies made it famous in '65. ;^)The whole thing reminds me of Linus and Lucy....

Great to hear this again after all these years. This tune was an instant classic in the Bay Area back then, and turned on a lot of rockers to jazz.

This was the tune that inspired one of the producers of the "Peanuts" TV specials to get Vince Guaraldi to provide the musical scores for those specials. He heard on his car radio, found Vince, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Heard the opening part of this piece in Good Morning VIetnam, brought back sweet memories of my youth. Thank you for posting

Guaraldi died at age 47 on February 6, 1976. The evening before, he had dined at Peanuts producer Lee Mendelson's home and was reportedly not feeling well, complaining of indigestion-like chest discomfort that his doctor had told him was nothing to worry about.  I wish his doctor had been more concerned.  He died way too young.

Andre Previn, Dave Brubek, and Vince -- three of the greats, in my book.

Been ages since I heard this, and then I was reminded of it by the announcement that "Black Orpheus" is being rewritten for Broadway.
