to Christy Quinn Jnr: you are right, "nil" is from the Irish! (equivalent of "chan eil" in Gàidhlig, I suppose)...and "nGra" as well!...unless that was shortened on a purpose?? (from "gràth")...in any case this song is one of my favorites! ;-)

@BAC1954 It could be, the Irish and Scottish are "cousins" after all. Very similar music and whiskey. My grandmother was from Donegal and traveled to Scotland many times. Musicians would travel between the two countries and pick up songs that they liked and brought back with them. Now fiddle music is differant, there must be dozens and dozens of styles in Ireland.
