Advice on playing Canadee-i-o by Nic Jones.

This video -- in conjunction with the video in which I perform the song here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0wZBWsvLOI&feature=related -- is intended to shed light on Nic Jones' arrangement of Canadee-i-o, and is something I've chosen to post online as a guitar teacher as well as a Nic Jones enthusiast.

In contrast, as an artist I perform my own material as well as my own versions of traditional songs. As such, I don't play Nic's arrangements at my own gigs. You can find videos of many of my own songs among my uploaded videos.

Thank you very much for your sincere and generous sharing of your intimate knowledge about playing Canadee io.... i have been mesmerized by this tune for many many years.... love it so much. i never knew what tuning it was played in and now additionally have the benefit of your very knowledgeable sharing.... not everyone could capture the essence of Nic's recorded version.... but you have and am so grateful for the sharing....perhaps i will be playing it soon as well, which if i can manage to learn it, will enjoy it deeply for all my time to be.....

What a well-done tutorial. You manage to show us things that are hard to hear without some more formal musical training without coming off as condescending at all. Thank you very much - what a treat to learn a song I've admired for a while.

Very close to Nic's original arrangement and technique' well done! I first heard this when Nic played at a small club in Welwyn, just after "eggs" had been released. I'd just brought a Fylde and was blown away by the way he made his Orsino ring and I went away clutching a signed copy, determined to learn it. I've always played it in open G. I'm now heading off to re-tune the guitar to Bflat and give it a go! Thanks

Hi Sam great video. Where can I find a tab that it's accurate as I will have to learn the notation before I can put your tips to use :-)It would be great if you could do all that slowly for those of us who are not up to that speed.I MUST learn to play this before I die and not die learning it! :-)Cheers

Yeah, same documentary. Drop that tuning down to the Bb! Love it.

Hahaha I saw the same documentry, on BBC 4? I also finished rehearsals during the day with a death metal band.. but there is something really inspiring about folk music like this. Can't get enough of it, I always leave an acoustic beside my chair so when I get in late from work I can just pick up and play. Awesome stuff.

Thanks Sam. I just discovered Nic Jones at 2:30am last night after a later rehearsal and now less the 24hrs later I want to learn! and I know nothing about folk style. Many thanks for this.

Just saw Jackie Nixon's post - it was a while ago but what a spiteful comment, must be a real sad individual, this Jackie. I'm sure Sam takes no notice, loved highs reply, but just to support all of a similar mind, this is a great post and superb playing.

What gauge of strings are you using for this tuning?

Hi Sam, Great vids always. I love this song, but I prefer the Dylan arrangement from Good As I Been to You. More prosaic, but I dig it. Any suggestions on how to work out the tab for Dylan's? It has a disorienting delay that makes it hard for me to figure. I assume it's one guitar and finger-style, but it sounds like he's zipping up and down the neck in standard tuning?!? Any suggestions would be way appreciated. I'm an intermediate guitarist at best, bear in mind - but ambitious.

Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge on playing the guitar. I have learned so much from you. Nic Jones is the BEST! Not many folks know of him in San Diego but I think his music is fantastic! Wanton Seed, Taoist Tale are the two I'm trying to figure out..wondering if you have played them? I enjoy watching you perform Sam..keep singing. Thanks Joe
