The wood is symbolic of the slang term for erection. The apple represents the apple of adam and eve. Once they had sex the tree became bare and they were cast from the 'garden of eden,' a perfect place where man and monkey could live in peace. The only rule was to not have sex. They bounced on his wood and were senteneced to death.

Why do people always give more of a fuck about what a crowd is doing than what the damn musicians on stage are? Honestly. Who cares? And on most televised performances, it seems that the crowd is told to not act like ninnys. I guess the same rules apply to these Letterman concerts as they do the actual show.
