I was 17 years old when this song was released on the Younger Than Yesterday album. From that moment on, all overrated music reviewers and those who thought they had any knowledge about pop music, despised this song. While I still hear and listen this song, with great devotion! Till today, 2015

What a lot of ignorant commentary.....

to The Cloud Maker who offered his condolences that I "didn't understand" this song, be assured that I get the moral of Dave's little story. It is just that I think that, as a song, it's awful. Maybe Cloud Maker should meditate to some Ultimate Spinach. Just as banal, but at least it has a melody.

Love this song. I thought it was called but there came winds. But I miss remembered.

he's talking about how we build walls to protect ourselves thinking how this will protect ourselves, we close ourselves off, that's a mistake, tear the walls down that separate ,the garden still flourishes, Mnd Gardens

Self-indulgent? It's brilliant. It's beyond what the Byrds were doing and closer to what the Beatles did a few months later on Sgt. Pepper. They really should have done more music like this.

If you don't understand it, you obviously have never meditated. Open your eyes bro, you don't have to be a hippie to understand this.

If I was McGuinn or Hillman THIS bit of self-indulgent drivel is what would have gotten Crosby fired, not his onstage antics at Monterey. Just about the best example of the most obvious hippie babble disguised as poetry that you'll come across in the 60s canon.

once upon a time there was so much stupid people talking around this music then the sun came and shout him all, they took shape and simmetry and track us down there came winds telling where the byrds are flying around the walls of this precious garden...

The lyrics..To me the important part was always the lyrics..Always loved this song.

Amen! The reason for the controversy I mention (with I'm indifferent to), is that the song is "excessive." I disagree. But it's out there.

I knew I was a Byrds fan for good when I heard Mind Gardens. I can see why it's a controversial cut in the catalog, but I, for one, love it.

When I first heard it I did not like it that much, but upon re-listening it has gotten better and better. McGuinn's guitar work is exemplary and the song is trippy, which was the intent to begin with. I actually agree with Crosby on this one.
