BURN DOWN THE MISSION

Elton John

Tumbleweed Connection (1970)

You tell me there's an angel in your tree.

Did he say he'd come to call on me?

For things are getting desperate in our home,

Living in the parish of the restless folks I know.

Everybody now, bring your family down to the riverside.

Look to the east to see where the fat stock hide.

Behind four walls of stone the rich man sleeps.

It's time we put the flame torch to their keep.

Burn down the mission,

If we're gonna stay alive.

Watch the black smoke fly to heaven,

See the red flame light the sky.

Burn down the mission,

Burn it down to stay alive.

It's our only chance of living,

Take all you need to live inside.

Deep in the woods the squirrels are out today.

My wife cried when they came to take me away.

But what more could I do just to keep her warm,

Than burn burn burn burn down the mission walls?

Everybody now, bring your family down to the riverside.

Look to the east to see where the fat stock hide.

Behind four walls of stone the rich man sleeps.

It's time we put the flame torch to their keep.

Burn down the mission,

If we're gonna stay alive.

Watch the black smoke fly to heaven,

See the red flame light the sky.

Burn down the mission,

Burn it down to stay alive.

It's our only chance of living,

Take all you need to live inside.

He said that Laura Nyro inspired this song. Listen to her works from "Eli and the Thirteenth Confession" and you can see where he found his inspiration.

Elton was smoking and listening to Leon Russell when he created this song ...... but it is as good as any Leon Russell song ever written or Elton's.......

One of his best ever. It should have been dusted off for the "Hunger Games" movies.

I remember driving through a park near Bloomington Indiana at the end of a long night of tripping, with this song playing in my mind .That is now well over 40 long years ago. But I can still feel the magic intonations. Or, maybe they were always there.

My brother, Easton, turned me on to Hercules way back in the 70's. Easton is no longer here , but his energy is. And, so, through EJ's music keeps my brother's energy and spirit alive man!! Thank u E j and Bernie Taupin.. and Easton Enjoy.................

The genius flowed through him and Bernie for many years - from '68 to '75 I would say -That's a pretty good run with premium songs like this coming out of them constantly...like afountain of creativity that seems to be endless....But all good things come to an end eventually.
