'Tis of a brave young highwayman

This story I will tell

His name was Willie Brennan

And in Ireland he did dwell

It was on the Kilwood Mountain

He commenced his wild career

And many a wealthy nobleman

Before him shook with fear

Chorus:

It was Brennan on the moor

Brennan on the moor

Bold, brave and undaunted

Was young Brennan on the moor

One day upon the highway

As young Willie he went down

He met the mayor of Cashiell

A mile outside of town

The mayor he knew his features

And he said, Young man, said he

Your name is Willie Brennan

You must come along with me

Chorus:

It was Brennan on the moor

Brennan on the moor

Bold, brave and undaunted

Was young Brennan on the moor

Now Brennan's wife had gone to town

Provisions for to buy

And when she saw her Willie

She commenced to weep and cry

Said, Hand to me that tenpenny

As soon as Willie spoke

She handed him a blunderbuss

From underneath her cloak

Chorus:

It was Brennan on the moor

Brennan on the moor

Bold, brave and undaunted

Was young Brennan on the moor

Now with this loaded blunderbuss

The truth I will unfold

He made the mayor to tremble

And he robbed him of his gold

One hundred pounds was offered

For his apprehension there

So he, with horse and saddle

To the mountains did repair

Chorus:

It was Brennan on the moor

Brennan on the moor

Bold, brave and undaunted

Was young Brennan on the moor

Now Brennan being an outlaw

Upon the mountains high

With cavalry and infantry

To take him they did try

He laughed at them with scorn

Until at last 'twas said

By a fa

Discovered a sensational mountain in Donegal called 'Errigal' on google street view, it's like a mini-Everest..:)

I grew up in 1950's/60's England and sadly I'd never heard of the Clancys and Tommy until I recently discovered them on youtube.I gather they were based in Ireland and America which is why they were largely unknown in England, mores the pity.

I've been looking at some of the mountain scenery in southwest Irelans on Google Earth/Streetview, it's as beautiful as anything else in the world..:)

My younger daughter loved this song. Sent it to her this week. Her older sister loved the Rovers' Unicorn. These children were fourth generation Irish/English American born.

from the West Coast of Canada, I recall those days in the early '60's Belfast & Newcastle, singing our heads off in the pubs, great times!

What memories. We used to sing this in class in primary school in Glasgow.

The "false-hearted" woman was an old flame of Willie's, before he married his wonderful wife. Bear in mind "a woman scorned..."

When I took my grandson to camp a couple years ago, we met a boy named Brennan. I remarked to his mother, "Ah, like 'Brennan on the Moor'" and her eyes glazed over like many young folk. Another thought is what was Willy Brennan doing with a false hearted woman, when he had a faithful, supportive wife with a blunderbuss under her cloak? Let that be a lesson to ye young Irish rebels!
