There was a wild colonial boy, Jack Duggan was his name

He was born and raised in Ireland in a place called Castlemaine

He was his father's only son, his mother's pride and joy

And dearly did his parents love the wild colonial boy

At the early age of sixteen years, he left his native home

And to Australia's sunny shore he was inclined to roam

He robbed the rich, he helped the poor, he shot James McAvoy

A terror to Australia was the wild colonial boy

One morning on the prairie as Jack he rode along

A listening to the mockingbird a singing a cheerful song

Out stepped a band of troopers, Kelly, Davis and Fitzroy

They all set out to capture him, the wild colonial boy

'Surrender now Jack Duggan for you see we're three to one

Surrender in the Queen's high name for you're a plundering son'

Jack pulled two pistols from his belt and he proudly waved them high

'I'll fight, but not surrender,' said the wild colonial boy

Lyrics www.allthelyrics.com/lyrics/tommy_makem/

He fired a shot at Kelly, which brought him to the ground

And turning 'round to Davis, he received a fatal wound

A bullet pierced his proud young heart from the pistol of Fitzroy

And that was how they captured him, the wild colonial boy

The Irish are finished. They'll be strangers in they're own land in 50 years. Betrayed by the beast. They love socialism and will be consumed by deals made behind thier backs. Maybe they can have a little theme park somewhere and they can feature Irish culture and music. Good that the Clancys didn't live to see it.

I will never forget Fermanagh and the border of Kinawley and Swanlinbar. I miss my Tommy Magee. He will always be with me. My first love. Going for ice cream and machine guns smashed against our heads. Just for ice cream. I can still smell the gasoline . . .

Incidentally, I've never understood why the southern Irish are catholics, I'd have thought they'd have been too proud to let themselves be ruled by a bloke in Rome!

The Clancys and Tommy M took America by storm with this number on the Sullivan show and the bookings must have come rolling in for years after that, no wonder they stayed mostly in America and as far as I know they never gigged here in England more's the pity.Incidentally I was looking at Castlemaine in google streetview and see there's a pub named Jack Duggan's..:)

The english are the biggest pussies around, they've let their country be overun by black immigrants, but Ireland is still pure white..;)(PS- i vote UKIP, let's get our borders back)

I'm always amused by the Irish with their songs about being tough. History and everything else clearly show that they're pussies. Even so, they're charming and likable and have spread their genes probably more effectively than any other group in the New World.

This is amazing. I got here via a search for the music to the BBC's Lord Peter Wimsey (by Dorothy L Sayers) adaptation, which led me to Bix Beidebeke and then here. Tommy Makem was my father's friend in Keady, NI. I think he was a cousin, the Clancy brothers certainly were. I met Sarah Makem - Tommy's mother - in about 1982 and I got in touch with Tommy about 6 months before he died. I'm astonished by the videos.

my six children learned this song from me when they were little. Their problem is their grand dad on my side was a 4th degree Knight of Columbus but their paternal grand dad was an Orange man.
