Lyrics:

Seen the lights go out on broadway

I saw the Empire State laid low

And life went on beyond the Palisades

They all bought Cadillacs

And left there long ago

They held a concert out in Brooklyn

To watch the island bridges blow

They turned our power down

And drove us underground

But we went right on with the show

I've seen the lights go out on Broadway

I saw the ruins at my feet

You know we almost didn't notice it

We'd seen it all the time on Forty-second Street

They burned the chuches up in Harlem

Like in the Spanish civil war

The flames were ev'rywhere

But no one really cared

It always burned up there before

I love reading books set in places I'm visiting, So I'm plowing through John Ringo's Black Tide Rising series which is more or less 1400 pages of Zombies, Sailing and Jingoism based on a Billy Joel song... (of note, the author is... special, and has gotten more so with age apparently. So I'm not recommending the books so much as the song, at least for general consumption)

If you know the history of this city, you know that we've dragged ourselves out of the pits of hell on so many occasions. I still remember the Fiscal Crises years and employees of the City of New York being paid with IOU's instead of checks, and that isn't a patch on the Depression, which isn't a patch on the worst days of the last century.

1976 Municipal Auditorium, Charleston, West VirginiaHe came down into the isles and I had an isle seat - he was arm's length but just beginning to be known. So no crowds, but I do remember - boy, do I remember.

In 1976, it seemed like a dark prophecy that was pretty likely to come true.In 1990, when he played this show, it looked likelier than ever.In 2000, it looked like he was going to be wrong after all.In 2001, he was too damn close to being proven right. In 2014, Miami looks likelier to be a ruined city in the next few years than New York. Face it, when a LeBron James rejects you for the city he previously rejected, that's bad.

The first time I heard this song, I just moved to NYC and thought it was about 9/11. Then found out he wrote it years ago. Some of the lyrics seem eerily prophetic if you think about it.
