Lyrics:

They say that these are not the best of times

But they're the only times I've ever known

And I believe there is a time for meditation

In cathedrals of our own

Now I have seen that sad surrender in my lover's eyes

And I can only stand apart and sympathize

For we are always what our situations hand us

It's either sadness or euphoria

So we'll argue and we'll compromise

And realize that nothing's ever changed

For all our mutual experience

Our separate conclusions are the same

Now we are forced to recognize our inhumanity

Our reason coexists with our insanity

But we choose betweenreality and madness

It's either sadness or euphoria

I totally relate to the lyrics in Summer, Highland Falls. It's either sadness or euphoria. Summer, Highland Falls is underrated. Great song.

One of Billy's best songs. It's underrated but he did it so well here...love it

This song originally appeared on his album Turnstiles, which if I'm not mistaken came out in 1977.

Been feeling manic all damn week long.... ugh.... (it's either sadness or euphoria)

Billy said the meaning of this song is dealing with the Manic modes, and depressed states that people suffering with Bi-Polar disease go through (which they just called Manic Depression when he wrote this song) ... when he wrote the melody... he especially kept this in mind as you hear the rising and falling notes throughout the song. Makes me sad when I hear it as I have many relatives who suffer from this disease. So the verdict is in, this is straight from the horses mouth...

Beautiful song. "...reason coexists with our insanity, and though we choose between reality and madness, it's either sadness or euphoria"

I wish I was there. I actually know the drummer and guitarist from a club in Bellmore NY called KJ Farrells. They play in a band called Off The Road. A group of professional artists who play in another band together when there not on the road. There all out of this world.

Your voice is going to go a little bit as you get older so cut him some slack? He's still doing concerts for god's sake!

yeah. and when i watched Rocky 6 (aka Rocky Balboa) I was thoroughly disappointed that Rocky did not win. christ, billy joel is old and you are expecting the guy to sing like he's 20? not disagreeing with you but he wrote this song in the 1970s.
