It could've been Ted Nugent shredding his ass off on guitar up there and it wouldn't have phased W. There styles are different but Billy Joel's voice is eerily similar to Eltons. Billy Joel's hit Big Shot I actually thought was Elton when i first heard it.

Love both. I've seen both in concert multiple times . Elton gets the nod because he OWNED the 1972-1976 music charts. To have an album be #1 before it's released is amazing.

Billy Joel has admitted several times that Elton John is a much more accomplished piano player than he is. I have seen both and it is clear, Elton is the better piano player and most certainly has the better voice.
