My mother saw him perform in the 1950's. She told me that when he came on to the stage in an all-white suit, the women gasped. What a talented, handsome man he was.

And to think that ONE picture stopped him from having a crossover career in TV-that picture of him being mobbed, hugged and admired by white teen-aged girls outside of a NYC nightclub in 1950. As one biographer said White Americans at that time didn't want their daughters dating Billy Eckstine. Apparently he was never bitter about the situation. A gracious man as well as a wonderful singer.

Mr B recorded his grand rendition months before Mr C. Billy Eckstine was accompanied at the session by Duke Ellington and Art Blakey. The record became a million seller and a #10 hit. Perry Como took it to the #1 spot with his later interpretation.

Billy Eckstein was a great singer but listen to frank Sinatras performance of prisoner of love oon his album Sinatra and strings. He phrased in a unique way that told the songs story. No other singer has ever done that before or since.

Dante James, I agree fully with your two or three year old comments. I also think, that without a doubt, Mr. B. was a fantastic singer. Plus, he was a forward-looking good musician.

Billy's popularity as a singer in the crooner tradition of that era often overlooks his contribution to modern jazz - in particular to be-bop which was never commercially successful appealing, as it did, mostly to other musicians and those with sophisticated tastes. Charlie Parker, Dizzie Gillespie and Dexter Gordon - giants of modern jazz which they virtually invented - all were band members.

Great stuff. As a teenager in London I thought he was the business. I and my mates even bought shirts with Billy Eckstine cut away collars. I am sure he sang 'Free' but I can't find it . Help and old Fart out, please.
