This woman can make you feel raw emotion and move you to places you didn't know you had in you. A true original, you can't learn this. Notice a young Luther Vandross as a back up singer, also ex-Harlette Ula Hedwig. They also sang backup for her in "Married Men" on the same show. May 26, 1979, the last show with John Belushi & Dan Aykroid. Buck Henry hosted.

I saw this live (on TV) when I was oh so young, remembered it for 40+ years, haunting then and still. Bette at her very best.

I (foolishly) watched—listened, really—to this at work, and nearly lost it at the end. Shivered me timbers.

I remember watching this live on SNL when I was only 9 years old. Even at that young age, I knew I was seeing a grand performance and I recall being emotionally moved. Bravo, Bette - Bravo, Tom.

This is such an exquisite piece of theater, what a brilliant and powerful delivery. Or is it theater -- Bette is fighting back the tears throughout the song. So am I. Tom's version of this is pure genius, but there is something special about this one. What a beautiful commemoration of that weird mixed feeling of nostalgia, joy and regret you feel looking back on enough time, and if you have a heart.

Hello: I remember this performance when it aired originally, but could never remember the song, and I have been looking ever since. Thank you so much. I just love the computer. And you for posting this. I am going to see if I can find it on a cd.

Superb! The true Bette. She did a duet with Tom Waites on another song of his "I Never Talk To Strangers" on her "Broken Blossom" album. Another underrated album.
