This is the first time I hear this cover and its absolutly amazing! The way she sings it makes it sounds very dramatic and real, its more of a show then just a song.

They used to date. Bette is obviously singing his own song to him.

You have to remember it was 1979, things were more dramatic and over the top. I'm not sure how anyone can listen to this and not feel the woman falling apart. It's one of the most emotional songs I have ever heard.

Radiohead is all one word......

Rhythm and pacing all over the place, fake breathiness adds to the shallowness of the experience. She has turned a beautiful lament into an Lloyd-weber-like fiasco. Simply put: Pure Shite.

'kin'ell. Great version. And the Scots' national anthem at the end.

I must be the only one who doesn't like her version...too breathy and it sounds trite.

writing this to something you said on a Bette Miedler cover of a Tom Waits song Martha you said that people should never tweak lyrics because it ruins the meaning. I just wanted you to listen to a song that evokes in my mind. Do you know that song CREEP from Radio Head? Listen to a cover by a hobo named Homeless Mustard doing CREEP he tweaks the lyrics and I think he makes it sound better than Radio Heads. Listen to it and tell me what you think....

So agree. Listen to Tom Waits, Christmas Card from a Hooker, I close my eyes and yeah he is that woman. Brilliant.

@Tresfres Bette tweeks lyrics all the time..which is how she makes the songs her own. God Bless Bette!! AND Tom Waits!!!

@aotweb2 I think songs are like poems, you simply can't change the lyrics. As a performer you must let me believe that you are that particular character even if that's different from your gender. Having said that as I said I love the way she sings it

@Tresfres I can understand a Tom Waits fan likes most original versions as well. I just wonder if Tom had anything to do with her arrangement.

she sings it beautifully but I hate the fact that she changes the lyrics

So tender, you can feel the love that exists in those words. Her voice seems so muggy that you can feel a love lost. It puts a complete and different spin on the song hearing it come from a lover, be it past or present. Just lovely
